The Client Brief

The RAF Wittering Officers’ Ball is a high-profile event, and the 2024 edition was themed “Through the Ages,” offering a historical journey through different time periods. The goal of the photography was to capture the elegance and grandeur of the RAF Officers, as well as the immersive theme, which included everything from medieval LARP (live action role-playing) sword fights to a Viking banquet.

The Creative Approach

This was a high profile event with two distinct visual needs, formal military elegance and bold themed entertainment. I worked with a clear shot plan based on the key deliverables, arriving early to cover the room and details before guests arrived, then photographing arrivals with a calm, confident approach so key personnel were captured cleanly.

Once the themed elements began, I shifted into documentary storytelling, staying unobtrusive while capturing action at the right moments so it felt lively and immersive. Throughout the night I kept the visual story consistent by mixing wide scene setting frames with close detail, and ensuring the gallery flowed naturally from formal to celebratory.

Two armoured knights engage in a duel while an audience watches, surrounded by a historical setting with hay bales and buildings.

A Personal Note from Nate

A ball like this deserves photographs that honour tradition while still celebrating the personality of the night.

Formal, but never stiff

Uniforms and ceremony carry real pride. My job is to keep that feeling, while still letting people look relaxed and human.

The theme is where the memories live

Through the Ages gave the evening its character. Capturing the live action role play moments and the Viking banquet details helped the story feel unique to this event.

A gallery that people actually use

The strongest event photography works in the real world, for comms teams, for social posts, and for guests sharing their portraits afterwards.
