Wildcats Theatre School is a long established and much loved performing arts organisation based in Stamford, that has been inspiring young people since 2008. With around ten dedicated staff members, they offer theatre classes, holiday activities, HAF funded programmes and memorable parties for children of all ages. Their message is clear and deeply rooted in everything they do. Every child deserves the chance to fly. Wildcats offers a place where children can build confidence, express themselves freely and discover the joy of performance in a supportive and creative environment. Their brand is known for being professional, creative and fun, and this shines through at every event they deliver.

The Client Brief

Wildcats commissioned me to photograph their annual showcase events to create a powerful library of images that reflect the personality and vibrancy of the school. These events are a highlight for the children and their families, bringing together proud parents, energetic performers and a supportive teaching team. The brief included full performance coverage, candid audience shots, backstage storytelling, natural portraits and a selection of family photographs. Although the events often take place towards the festive season, the images needed to feel timeless and versatile so they could be used throughout the year without looking tied to one particular moment.

The Creative Approach

My approach was to blend storytelling with high quality performance photography, allowing the events to unfold naturally while ensuring that each meaningful moment was captured with clarity and emotion. The atmosphere evolves throughout the day, from the excitement of getting ready, to the focus of the performances, to the joy shared between children and families.

Due to the type of events and the locations, lighting was extremely difficult. Even when pushing the camera to its limits, additional light was needed to maintain consistency and quality. I used flash only when absolutely necessary and did so as discreetly as possible. This ensured the photographs were well lit while keeping the experience calm for the children. I stepped into the centre of the room only at carefully chosen moments so I could capture expression, movement and detail without distracting performers or breaking the flow of the show.

This was especially important during the mini sessions. These moments required sensitivity, patience and subtle photography. I worked quietly, waited for natural pauses and focused on maintaining the sense of immersion for the children. Every decision was made with their experience in mind.

Throughout the sessions, my goal was to highlight the values that make Wildcats special. Professionalism, creativity, fun and a genuine sense of belonging. Every image aimed to honour the effort, pride and joy that filled the room.

Wildcats theatre events are full of the moments that make my job meaningful. The quiet nerves backstage, the spark of confidence on stage and the pride that radiates from parents throughout the day. Photographing these events reminds me how powerful creativity can be for a child’s confidence and sense of self. Being invited back for multiple years is something I appreciate more than I can say. Wildcats feels like a family and capturing their story is always a highlight of my year.
